How to Start Planning Your Next Vacation

By Peaches Raglin

Traveler exploring a destination

Planning a vacation should feel exciting, not overwhelming. A few thoughtful decisions at the beginning can make it easier to compare options and avoid last-minute confusion.

Choose the experience first

Start with the feeling you want from the trip. You may want a quiet beach escape, an energetic city weekend, a family-friendly resort, a cruise that visits several destinations or a celebration with a group.

Set a realistic total budget

Consider transportation, lodging, food, activities, insurance when selected, local transportation and an emergency cushion. A total-trip budget is more useful than comparing only the advertised room or cruise price.

Keep your dates flexible when possible

Changing departure dates by a day or two can affect availability and pricing. Record both your preferred dates and any flexibility before beginning a search.

Prepare accurate traveler details

Traveler names must match the identification required by the supplier. Children’s ages, room needs, accessibility considerations and departure cities can also affect the available options.

Review before authorizing payment

Confirm names, dates, destinations, room or cabin type, cancellation terms, payment deadlines and included services. Pricing and availability can change until the applicable supplier confirms the reservation.

Use the Plan Your Trip checklist or request personal travel assistance.
